Tasmanian School Merino Wether Challenge Returns!

This September, the Tasmanian Wool Centre is proud to once again support the Tasmanian School Merino Wether Challenge, an initiative giving students a unique, hands-on introduction to the world of sheep and wool production.

Established by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) in partnership with the Stud Merino Breeders Association of Tasmania, the Wether Challenge invites school teams from across the state to care for a small team of Merino wethers over several months. Supplied by local studs, these sheep become part of the students’ daily routines, with participants learning firsthand about feeding, handling, and animal care — an experience far beyond the classroom.

At the end of the program, students present their wethers in a judged competition, assessed on both meat and wool quality. But it’s not just about the ribbons. The challenge fosters vital skills in animal husbandry, business understanding, and industry networking, all within a supportive, practical environment.

As part of this year’s program, our Manager, Jessica Newton, will once again represent the Tasmanian Wool Centre, sharing insights into the manufacturing and processing end of the wool pipeline. By connecting students with the full journey of wool — from paddock to product — Jess helps them see where their hard work fits into the broader wool industry.
To support teachers and students, AWI also launched a dedicated 10-week educational resource through their Learn About Wool website, covering key aspects of wool production. This resource has been widely praised by agricultural educators for its practical approach and real-world relevance.

We’re excited to be part of an initiative that builds confidence, skills, and a love of working with sheep and wool in the next generation.
