About Us

There’s something special about Ross, Tasmania – a beautifully preserved 19th-century village nestled along the Macquarie River, where history and charm come together. It’s the perfect place to pause on your journey along the Midland Highway, and at the heart of it all, you’ll find the Tasmanian Wool Centre.

Founded in 1988, the Wool Centre was created with the support of the Ross Municipal Council, State and Federal Government grants, and generous community contributions. As a not-for-profit organisation, we take pride in giving back to the Ross community, helping to preserve its unique heritage and create wonderful visitor experiences.

Surrounded by world-class wool-producing properties, we have grown to become Tasmania’s largest retailer of woollens, offering a carefully curated selection of luxuriously soft knitwear, warm accessories, and premium-quality yarns. Every brand we stock uses Australian and Tasmanian wool, and while some products are proudly made in Australia, others are crafted overseas to offer a range of styles and price points. Our focus is always on quality, sustainability, and innovation – if we find an exceptional product using Australian wool in a creative way, we’re excited to share it with you!

A visit to the Wool Centre isn’t complete without exploring our onsite Museum, which celebrates Ross’ rich wool heritage and local history. Our Wool Exhibition and History Gallery showcase a fascinating collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents, with permanent displays on the Ross Bridge, Female Factory, and Horton College, as well as rotating exhibitions throughout the year.

Ross is a place where you can slow down, soak in the history, and experience the beauty of Tasmania’s midlands. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick break or planning a day trip, we look forward to welcoming you to the Tasmanian Wool Centre – where heritage, wool, and warm hospitality come together.
