This photograph shows Macquarie House and Store in Ross, and also probably the owner Henry Isaac Davis, three of his sons, and a delivery man and boy. Henry Isaac Davis was born the son of a convict in 1841. He built his general store business up from nothing and became highly regarded in the Ross district. His obituary in 1927 read:
‘In his private affairs he showed keen business acumen, and succeeded in the face of difficulties. Starting from nothing, he was able to make himself and family independent and to give his children a good education – an advantage which he himself never had.’ [‘A Life of Service: Henry Isaac Davis of Ross’, The Examiner 16 August 1927]
